You can make a big impact on your space by making just a few changes, so why not resolve to take out the old and bring in the new for the new year?!
Here are some ideas that can make a big difference creating fresh spaces in each area of your home:
- Get bold with new wall paint colors. I recently read that “orange is the new black” (and the new pink!) and is “the color for 2012.” I saw a post on “Using 2012′s Color of The Year” with a beautifully painted orange room that made quite a cheerful statement! Whatever color you decide on for a room, get ready to bring out the paintbrushes and brighten up your space with color!
- Clear the clutter! That alone will change any area in your home! Enough said.
- Bring life into your work area. One of the things I noticed recently as I was going through Target was that there are so many beautiful office accessories and decorative accents in many color schemes for the home office. You can really make a big splash using colorful or pattern office accessories. Also, a fresh coat of paint to cheer up the workspace would help, too!
- Hang it up in those common areas. I found that adding new wall art in the dining room, living room, and family room areas presents a whole new feeling to the space. You can even move around art pieces to different rooms. I’ve noticed some very creative ways to group art on the wall, which you’ll find in my Home & Office Styling topic.
- Do a simple kitchen makeover. It doesn’t have to cost a lot to make changes in your kitchen. For instance, you can give your cupboards, cabinets, and pantries a lift by installing slider drawers or space-saving solutions (like at the Container Store). I spiffed up my countertops by utilizing some lazy susan (round turntables) to group items on, preventing a cluttered look on counter while still having everything I wanted handy! For changing the look of your cabinets and countertops, one blogger recommended: “Instead of tackling a complete kitchen remodel, they may update the color and texture of their countertops and cabinets with a paint product called Cabinet and Countertop Transformations for a new look that costs less than $500.”
- Put romance in your bedroom. New linens, bedspread, and decorative throw pillows can give the entire bedroom a whole new look. I know of a couple who bought a new bed and bedspread, and then saw that the rest of the room needed everything new, too! So, new long multi-colored blue curtains gave their room a finished, warm and cozy feel, while several old furniture pieces were removed and replaced with just a couple, more functional items. Of course, the entire bedroom was also rearranged! To make a change to my bedroom, I just added bed curtains over and around my bed. Quite elegant, I think!
- Splash up some fun in the bathroom. Change your bathroom towels and maybe get some new, more decorative towel racks. There are new color schemes in every store to inspire you for a bathroom makeover, as it did for me! One color scheme I saw inspired me to paint my vanity cabinet and put new hardware on it, then replace my faucet and towel racks to match the new bronze faucet. I replaced all my old towels and shower curtain and framed wall mirror, and wha-la, I got a new bathroom without spending a fortune to do it!
- Transform a closet into a stylish and functional living area. I came across a post about ways to convert a closet into a home office, and have actually done this several times for clients with dysfunctional, neglected storage closets. Suddenly, the space is charming instead of scary! As for myself, I converted my home office closet into a filing room!
